Rep. Melancon Votes to Send Landmark Higher Education Legislation to the President
Bill Will Create a Higher Ed Disaster Relief Loan Program, Rein in Tuition Hikes, and Make Financial Aid More Accessible
July 31, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.) today joined an overwhelming bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives to approve final legislation that would address the soaring price of college tuition and remove other obstacles that make it harder for qualified students to go to college.  Rep. Melancon also successfully worked to include a provision in the final bill creating an Education Disaster and Emergency Relief Program.  This loan program would aid higher education institutions affected by presidentially declared major disasters or emergencies, including those schools damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.) has joined colleagues from disaster-stricken regions across the country in introducing legislation to provide more immediate and consistent tax relief to families and businesses devastated by natural disasters.  The Fair Disaster Tax Relief Act (H.R. 6640) would establish a nationwide, permanent disaster relief program for families and businesses affected by floods, tornadoes, wildfires, hurricanes, or any other disaster that yields a presidential disaster declaration.  The bill currently has 13 original cosponsors from nine states.
